2 drug traffickers handed 12-year jail terms, fines

Ammon News - The State Security Court Monday handed down sentences of 12 years in jail with hard labour and a JD10,000 fine against two people convicted of attempting to smuggle a narcotic substance to the Kingdom from a neighboring country.

In its session Monday, the court, presided over by military Judge Lt. Col. Amer Halasa and comprising judges Maj. Thamer Qateifan and Maj. Omar Batoush as members, said the ruling came after modifying the charges from "importing a narcotic substance with the intent of trafficking."

The court acquitted two other defendants in the case and ordered the confiscation of the drugs seized.

According to the charge sheet, the convicts had attempted to smuggle in a quantity of narcotic substances, Captagon pills, from a neighboring country, and that 263,000 pills and six kilograms of hashish were seized.
