Senate President: Political determination available to push Jordan's comprehensive reform drive

Senate President, Faisal Fayez, affirmed on Wednesday, that "a serious" political will is available to push the "desired" comprehensive reform, in all political, economic, administrative and social fields.

The changing policies are necessary as Jordan enters the 2nd bicentennial, he said, adding that various challenges facing the country couldn't be addressed as was previously done prior to the "Arab Spring" and the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing an audience at the Upper House, comprised of popular figures, representing various political and social forces from Zarqa governorate, Fayez raised several national issues pertaining to political and administrative reform, the legislation regulating the Kingdom's political life, and the most prominent economic challenges, foremost is the "exacerbating" poverty and unemployment rates to "unprecedented" levels.

Fayez stressed the importance of paying attention to "large and vital" investment projects, supporting small and entrepreneurial enterprises, and exploiting arable lands to reduce problems of unemployment and poverty.

Based on His Majesty King Abdullah II’s discussion papers on Jordan's future and comprehensive reform, he said ad hoc committees are studying the "most prominent ideas, visions and solutions" discussed at dialogues on various issues."

Fayez called on confronting all attempts aimed at targeting Jordan's stability and security by strengthening the "internal front" and its cohesion.

In turn, the attendees highlighted the current challenges, foremost is the "desired" political reform and legislation regulating political life, finding a consensual election law, addressing administrative slack and combating corruption.

Also figured high were the attendees' demands on raising level of services provided in all regions countrywide, solving problems of poverty, unemployment and indebtedness, and creating a "stimulating and attractive" investment environment for major projects to stimulate national economy and better utilizing Kingdom's tourism potentials.
