Jordan's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman Safadi Tuesday said there is still no comprehensive strategy to end the Syrian crisis, urging the international community to find a political solution to the 10-year crisis.
In the virtual fifth edition of the Conference of Brussels to support the future of Syria and the region, Safadi, who is also the deputy prime minister said, "The dangerous reality is that ten years into the crisis, there is no end in sight. There is to real strategy to stop the devastation..."
He emphasized that the situation in Syria cannot go on, stressing that any political solution should be based on UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
"The solution that would guarantee peace would be accepted by the Syrian people and serve to preserve the integrity of Syria and its territory. It would also have to restore security and stability in Syria and rid it of terrorism and lead to the withdrawal of foreign forces from its lands," Safadi highlighted.
He also stressed that any solution to the crisis should guarantee the safe and voluntary return of refugees.
He said countries that host Syrian refugees should not be left alone to grapple with the financial burdens of taking in refugees. He warned of the decline in international support for host countries.
Safadi noted that more than 1.3 million Syrian refugees live in Jordan with a fraction of 10 percent living in refugee camps while the rest live in urban areas, adding that some 144,000 refugees go to public schools, straining the infrastructure.
He said that Syrian refugees receive the same medical services as Jordanians, highlighting that Jordan was the first country to start vaccinating its refugee population.
He urged the international community to support Jordan's response plan to the refugee crisis 2021, stressing that the crisis should not be shouldered solely by the host countries.
He said that the Brussels Conference reiterates a "clear commitment" from the UN and the EU to the refugee issue, adding that the conference bears witness to the international community's commitment to refugees.
The EU and the UN organized the Conference of Brussels to support the future of Syria and the region.
