FM holds consultative talks with Egyptian, Palestinian counterparts

Ammon News - Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, discussed in Cairo on Wednesday, with his Egyptian, Palestinian counterparts, Sameh Shoukry, and Riyad al-Maliki, regional and international efforts aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of establishing the independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to the two-state solution, international law, international legitimacy resolutions, and the Arab Peace Initiative.

Speaking during a consultative meeting held within the framework of permanent and continuous coordination to serve the Palestinian cause, the ministers called on the international community to exert pressure on Israel to stop the "illegal and unlawful" unilateral measures in the occupied Palestinian territories, including the construction and expansion of settlements, land confiscation and displacement of Palestinians, as well as the ongoing violations on Islamic and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem.

The ministers reaffirmed the importance of the role of the Hashemite custodianship over the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, in protecting them, and preserving their Arab, Islamic and Christian identity, as well as the legal and historic status in the city.

The meeting comes as a continuation of a series of consultative efforts between the three countries, to build on the outcomes and decisions of the Arab League's last meeting at the ministerial level in its extraordinary session, which was held at the invitation of Jordan and Egypt, according to a press statement.

The meeting, which came on the sidelines of the 155th regular session of the Arab League at the ministerial level, discussed regional and international efforts aimed at resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of establishing an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital, according to the two-state solution, the statement pointed out.

The ministers urged international partners, including America, to continue their role in sponsoring and reviving the peace process in the Middle East, in addition to activating work of the International Quartet, and launching "serious" negotiations on the basis of international law, relevant United Nations resolutions, the land- for- peace principle, and the approved international references that leading to ending of the occupation and the implementation of the two-state solution.

The ministers urged the international community to fulfill its obligations to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), with the aim of enabling it to overcome the "large" financial deficit it is battling, and to offer services towards Palestinian refugees in accordance with its UN mandate.

The ministers reiterated the importance of continuing action and sustaining joint consultations in the coming period, in a manner that serves to provide a "favorable" environment to revive "serious" and "constructive" negotiations that end the current stalemate and promote the peace process, leading to a "just and comprehensive" solution to the Palestinian issue.

Speaking during the meeting, Safadi said the Palestinian cause is the central issue, and that security, stability and peace in the region basically requires justice for the Palestinian people and fulfillment of their legitimate aspirations, foremost of which is their right to freedom and an independent state on the June 4, 1967 lines, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Safadi stressed the continued coordination between the three countries, with all the Arab countries to support the Palestinian people and create a "true" horizon for the resumption of negotiations aimed at achieving a just and comprehensive peace that meets all the Palestinians people's legitimate rights.
