Ammon News - The Minister of Planning and International Cooperation, Nasser Shraideh, and the Managing Director of the Belgian Development Agency, Jean Van Wetter, signed an agreement to establish an office for the agency in the Kingdom with the aim of boosting development cooperation and partnership between the two countries.

The signing ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of State for Economic Affairs Umayya Toukan and the Ambassador of Belgium to Jordan, Filip Vanden Bulcken.

Toukan highlighted bilateral relations in the context of the European Union, thanks to the strong friendship between His Majesty King Abdullah II and King Philippe of Belgium, and the solid partnership between the institutions in various fields, which is witnessing further growth and prosperity. The establishment of an office for the Belgian Development Agency in Jordan reflects the distinguished and close bilateral ties, he added.

In a press statement by the Planning Ministry on Tuesday, the minister said that the move is an important indicator that reflects the extent of development in bilateral ties, and will boost means of cooperation and development, especially in the sectors of water, agriculture, digitization, education, training, employment, health as well as with the private sector.

The move also paves the way, he added, for further cooperation between Jordan and the agency through facilitating the implementation of projects funded by various donors, including the European Union and the agencies of the member states of the Union, as well as mobilizing additional funding sources. Jordan is looking forward to benefiting from the agency's considerable experience in various aspects including the technical and vocational education and training fields, and training-based income-generating projects, Shraideh pointed out.

The minister pointed to a wide range of projects by the Belgian Development Agency in many countries around the world, adding that Jordan is looking forward to increasing cooperation with the private sector through exchanging expertise to promote an appropriate environment that supports skills development through vocational training and assistance to SMEs to expand their businesses.

The education sector and providing income-generating opportunities linked to vocational training programs are among the basic elements that require more attention, he pointed out.

The Belgian envoy underscored the depth of bilateral relations in various fields, stressing the commitment of his country and the European Union to continue supporting Jordan at the social and economic level. He also commended Jordan's efforts in hosting the Syrian refugees and the importance of providing support to Jordan to cope with the burden of hosting refugees.

Meanwhile, Van Wetter stated that the agency is ready to hold development consultations to determine the interventions to be implemented in the future, and to achieve cooperation that serves the interests of both parties within the framework of international development efforts that third parties can also benefit from.

The agency, he noted, began its operations with a project funded by the European Union delegation through the "Madad" Fund to support host communities in Jordan and Syrian refugees, by linking vocational training with job opportunities, and in cooperation with German and Spanish development agencies.
