On 9 November 1989, the spokesperson of the Government of the German Democratic Republic by accident announced at television prime time that as of then, East Germans were free to travel to the West. The first of them immediately made their way to the border crossing points in East-Berlin, to visit the Western part of the city. For three hours the East German border police, who had not been informed about the new regulations, refused to let them pass, until they gave way in the late evening of 9 November 1989 and let thousands of people move from East to West and West to East, almost without checking them. The Berlin Wall, which had separated the city and Germany for over 28 years, had come down.
