Foreign ministry decries continued publication of the Prophet's caricatures

24-10-2020 09:14 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates condemned on Saturday the continued publication of caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, under the pretext of freedom of expression.

In a press statement, the Ministry’s spokesperson, Ambassador Dhaifallah Fayez, affirmed the Kingdom’s condemnation of the continued publication of such caricatures, and its "deep" dissatisfaction with these practices that harm the feelings of nearly 2 billion Muslims.

The step also constitutes a "clear" targeting of religious symbols, beliefs and sanctities, and a "flagrant" violation of the principles of respect for others and their beliefs, according to Fayez.
Highlighting Amman's tolerance-driven role, Fayez said Jordan has always been supporting the culture of peace internationally, and the promotion of mutual understanding, harmony and coexistence among peoples.

This policy was evident in the Jordanian initiatives adopted by the international community, such as the Global Harmony Week initiative and the Common Word initiative, according to the spokesperson.

Fayez warned that the danger in such cases comes from people basing ideologies that reject the other on official political positions.

"What the international community wants today in the midst of many dangers threatening all of humanity is more solidarity, and convergence, not sowing and feeding sectarian, religious or ethnic divisions," he said.

These abuses, he noted, feed the culture of extremism and violence that the Kingdom condemns.

Fayez also affirmed Jordan's condemnation of any "discriminatory and misleading" attempts that seek to link Islam with terrorism, and falsifying the true essence of Islam.

To stop these denounced practices, he pointed to the necessity of joining all efforts to combat the culture of hatred and discrimination against others and to consolidate a culture of respect for the other, spearheading the international community to reject any insult to religious sanctities and symbols.

He also affirmed the Kingdom's support for the statement issued by the Organization of the Islamic Conference, which expresses the position of the Islamic nation in this regard.
