Arab ministerial cmte to meet on Jerusalem soon

23-12-2017 12:28 PM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordanian Foreign Minister Ayman Al-Safadi said Friday the Arab League Ministerial Council's committee on Jerusalem would meet soon to chart a roadmap for international lobbying for Jerusalem status as an occupied city.

Building on the UN General Assembly resolution, the committee will mull the possible measures to reaffirm that Jerusalem is one of the final status issues on the agenda of the Palestinian-Israeli peace talks, he said.

Al-Safadi, the current chair of the Arab League Ministerial Council, made the comments in an interview with the Jordanian TV station tonight.

Al-Safadi noted that the coming meeting of the committee aims to reaffirm the Arab identity of the Holy City and reject any attempts to change its legal status quo.

He highlighted the need of continued cooperation with the European Union and the international community to break the current stalemate in the Middle East peace process and minimize the impacts of Trump's decision on the peace efforts.

He welcomed the UNGA resolution as providing impetus for the peace process, the Arab peace initiative and the two-state vision for peace in the region.

The Arab ministerial committee is made up of Jordan, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and Morocco in addition to the League's Secretary-General.

The UNGA resolution yesterday delivered a stinging rebuke to US President Donald Trump by rejecting his unilateral decision to recognize Jerusalem as capital of Israel on December 6 and move the US Embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to the Holy City.
