Jordan Reviews Economic Challenges with UN Team

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordanian Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury Tuesday briefed a US fact-finding mission, affiliated with UNHCR, on the economic challenges facing Jordan as a result of the regional turmoil and hosting of the Syrian refugees.

Fakhoury stressed the importance of the international community’s commitment to sustain support and to consider the regional situation to enable the Kingdom to continue honoring its responsibilities of providing services to the refugees and the host communities.

He also stressed the importance of investing in the Jordanian reform process and the Jordan Compact in order to support the Jordan Response Plan (JRP).

The planning minister said the Jordan has reached its “ultimate limit” in shouldering the burdens of hosting the Syrian refugees.

For their part, the mission’s members commended Jordan’s role in hosting the refugees, calling it a “role model” in dealing with the issue.

They expressed understanding of the burdens and challenges the Kingdom is facing and underscored the US commitment to support the Kingdom in overcoming them.

For his part, Fakhoury also praised the distinguished relations and strategic and historical partnership between Jordan and the United States.

He valued the efforts of those providing humanitarian support and assistance and working with the Jordanian government to support Jordan’s efforts to provide a decent level of services, meet the needs of Syrian brothers according to humanitarian and international standards and the increased bilateral support provided by the United States to Jordan to support the budget and Jordan’s development and reform programs.

The two parties also discussed the importance of the continued support to implement the Jordanian Human Resources Development Strategy, maximize the increase in cash aids, purchase national goods and services in order to achieve the added value of the Jordanian economy and maintain in 2017 the levels of support provided for the JRP and focus on the priorities of the Jordanian government, including capital expenditure projects to support host communities.
