Tareq Aziz buried in Jordan

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Former Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Tareq Aziz was laid to rest at a cemetery in the city of Madaba, south of Amman, after his body was flown to Jordan.

The funeral took place after a service at a church in the West Amman district of Swaifiyeh, where his family members, Iraqi figures and Jordanian trade members were joined by hundreds of mourners and sympathizers. Mayor of Madaba Mustafa Maeyeah praised the government of Jordan for agreeing to the request from Aziz's family to have him buried in the kingdom.

Named foreign minister in 1983 and then deputy premier in 1991, Aziz was one of Iraq's best-known figures under the rule of former president Saddam Hussein. He died on June 5 in an Iraqi prison at the age of 79.
