Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Dina Kawar, welcomed the UN Secretary-General announcement of receiving the report of the Board of Inquiry regarding incidents leading to widespread damage of UN facilities in the Gaza Strip during the war last summer.

Kawar, who is also the UN Security Council president for the current month, told reporters that Jordan was leading the charge for countries that have demanded an investigation into these events, noting that she hoped the report would be issued earlier.

She added that the report showed that Israel was responsible for widespread damage at seven UN facilities in the Gaza Strip and the deaths of Palestinians their during the last war, noting that these practices are a clear violation of international humanitarian law and the immunity of the UN.

Kawar reiterated Jordan's condemnation of the Israeli attacks, stressing the need to take the report into consideration as the beginning of a process that should include necessary follow-up in order to ensure accountability, protect Palestinian civilians, and ensure the safety and security of UN facilities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

Permanent Observer of the State of Palestine to the UN Riyad Mansour expressed deep regret that the UN Security Council had not acted collectively since the report was issued, noting that Palestinian delegates in addition to Jordanians had called on a number of the Council's members to ensure that the Council takes responsibility for addressing these violations.

He added that the Council's members had a responsibility to provide protection to the hundreds of thousands of civilians who had approached the UN headquarters and schools seeking safe haven.
