UN honours 849 Jordanian peacekeepers in Cote d’Ivoire

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The UN Operation in Cote d’Ivoire has decorated 849 Jordanian peacekeepers in the Mission with the UN medal of honour as recognition of their commitment to service.

Head of UNOCI, Ms Aichatou Mindaoudou, announced this when he briefed journalists on the activities of the mission in Abidjan on Thursday.

Mindaoudou, also the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the mission, said it was habitual of the UN system to reward hard work and commitment.

“The medal is in recognition of the peacekeepers’ outstanding contribution to the peace process in Côte d’Ivoire.

“They showed a perfect example of the peacekeeping model recommended by the UN Charter,” she said.

The UN official used the occasion to charge security personnel on peacekeeping mission in the country to commitment in the discharge of their duties.

She thanked the Jordanian armed forces for their commitment and contributions to UN peacekeeping operation around the world.

A written speech presented by Brig.-Gen. Taha Al-Aqeel, Head of the Jordanian contingent, quoted him as thanking the UN mission for the honour.

“The UN is working hard to ensure that people lived in peace around the world, the Jordanian armed forces remain a reliable ally in this commitment,” he was quoted as saying.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Jordan’s contribution of troops for peacekeeping operations dates back to 1989 in Angola.

NAN further reports that Jordan currently has contingents contributing to peacekeeping operations in Liberia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti, Darfur and Southern Sudan.
