According to other agencies, there is "no joy for lebanon or Jordon" in the West Asia championship league. They report as follows.
Lebanon were held to a goalless draw by Jordan Thursday in their opening match of the West Asian Championship, which is currently taking place in Doha. Lebanon fielded a predominantly young squad with the odd veteran, though none of the overseas players took part for the Cedars apart from Mohammad Ali Khan.
Italian head coach Giusseppi Giannini, using the tournament to test new talent ahead of the decisive Asia Cup qualifier with Thailand next month, called up the Lebanese football league’s top scorer Adnan Melhem for his first international cap.
However, the squad also saw the return of Haitham Faour, who missed the recent internationals against Kuwait and Iran due to a dispute with Giannini.
Lebanon’s starting lineup consisted of Larry Mhanna in goal, with Walid Ismael, Nour Mansour, Mohammad Khan, Hassan Daher and Ali Hamam in defense. Faour, Mohammad Chamas, Abbas Atwi and Hasan Chaito occupied central areas behind lone striker Melhem.
Jordan also went for youth players over celebrities, however, they will look to build on their recent success after losing to Uruguay in their intercontinental World Cup playoff.
The match saw very few chances for goals, with both teams unable to take the initiative. The Jordanian side tried their luck a couple of times from a distance, but Larry Mhanna was on hand to deny them.
Giannini’s wait for his first win at the Cedars’ helm thus continues after two draws against Kuwait and a loss at the hands of Iran in Lebanon’s Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
The West Asian Championship features nine teams who were divided into three groups. The top three teams will go through directly to the semifinals, and will be joined by the best second-placed from the three groups.
Lebanon’s next match is against Kuwait Sunday, while Jordan take on Kuwait next Wednesday.
In Group A, Qatar beat Palestine 1-0. They will next face Saudi Arabia.
In Group B Oman and Bahrain drew 0-0.
