Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Southern Amman Court on Wednesday released Member of Parliament mohammad Al-Asha al-Dawaymeh from jail, after he was ordered detained for 15 days pending investigation into vote-buying charges.
Dawaymeh was released on a JD 5,000 bail.
The court earlier on Wednesday ordered the detention of Dawaymeh for 15 days pending investigation into election fraud charges related to use of "political money" during the last parliamentary elections held in January.
The Southern Amman Court Judge Akef Tweiqat ordered the detention of MP Dawaymeh on chrages of vote-buying during his campaign earlier in the year.
MP Dawaymeh was being held at Jweideh Prison pending investigation as the court decided to try him on the charges since the parliament is on legislative recess during which lawmakers do not have immunity from prosecution.
After appearing before the court Wednesday morning, Dawaymeh denied the charges, telling Ammon News that he "challenges the accusations," stressing that he did not "buy or sell" any votes during his campaign.
The lawmaker said that a woman filed a complaint in court against him, accusing him of buying votes, and brought two witnesses, prompting the court the subpoena him.
The woman was withholding 700 electoral cards for one of the current deputies in the Lower House, Dawaymeh claimed in statements to Ammon News, explaining that he paid the woman money to return the cards to their owners.
He denied that the payment of money was for the purpose of buying or selling votes.
"If it is proven that I have bought one vote, then I will immediately resign from parliament," Dawaymeh said, stressing that his campaign slogan during the elections was "He who sells his vote is a traitor to his religion and country."
Dawaymeh said he does not know the reason behind the woman filing the complaint now, despite the passing of over 8 months since the incident.
Ammon News learned that the Amman Court Judge will subpoena another member of parliament for questioning over charges of vote buying and use of political money during the campaign.
