Turkish president's chief adviser lectures at World Affairs Council-Jordan

08-05-2013 10:12 PM

Ammon News - AMMAN (Petra) – The Turkish president’s chief adviser, Ershat Hurmuzlu, has said his country views Jordan, led by His Majesty King Abdullah II, as an important player in maintaining stability in the region.

While delivering a lecture on "Arab-Turkish Relations" at the World Affairs Council-Jordan on Tuesday, Hurmuzlu stated that Jordan and Turkey enjoy strong and distinguished ties.

He also expressed his country's interest in further developing its ties with Jordan and other Arab countries.

Noting that the Palestinian issue was not an Arab issue but rather an Islamic and human one, he stressed the need to establish a Palestinian state.

The Turkish official said his country denounced the recent Israeli attacks on Syria, pointing out that Turkey does not want "militarization" of Syria by regional countries. "So, how can we accept this from Israel?" Hurmuzlu asked, declaring Israel’s move as an unacceptable act.

"The Syrian people are our brethren and have a huge heritage. The elites must realize that they will perish and the people will remain," he stated.

Hurmuzlu noted that Ankara had in the past dispatched its ambassador in Damascus to negotiate with the Syrian regime, but Turkish officials felt they had to choose between the regime and the people after the shelling of Latakia during the month of Ramadan.

Turkey chose the Syrian people and now seeks a satisfactory solution for them, he concluded.
