Maytah: Gov't resignation after election a constitutional "norm"

26-01-2013 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - State Minister for Media Affairs and Communications and Minister of Culture Samih Maytah said on Saturday that the government's resignation after elections is the norm under the constitution that "we are ready for."

He told Petra and local dailies that Wednesday's parliamentary polls had a new characteristic as the formation of the new government will be conducted through consultations with parliamentary blocs, a pattern repeatedly emphasised by His Majesty King Abdullah.

Maytah, who is also official government spokesman, said the new political system is a step reflecting a genuine desire to build a new approach to forming governments, which will become a political norm that will deepen as long as Houses of Deputies are based on blocs and platforms.

The government, the minister said, had administered this key political phase, offering whatever support it could to the Independent Elections Commission and creating a proper political and media climate well aware that it will pave the way for a new government in line with the royal vision.

On another issue, Maytah thanked the armed forces for received Syrian refugees around-the-clock, adding that those efforts had doubled recently when more than 20,000 Syrians crossed into the Kingdom over a period of three days last week.

"Over the past days, the armed forces were receiving more than five thousand refugees each day," he said.

Maytah said the border guard announced on Thursday that 3,932 refugees had crossed the border in 24 hours, adding that the new figures had swelled the overall number of refugees in the Kingdom to approximately 320,000.

He said the dramatic increase in the numbers of displaced people that had stretched the Kingdom's resources is a clear message to the world that it should deal more seriously with the refugee problem and provide aid proportionate with the burdens.

It is also a message to the world community to seek a solution to the Syrian crisis and prevent it from further escalation, he added.
