Ammon News - ( Jordan Times )- The Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on Saturday unveiled the rules regulating campaigns for the January 23 parliamentary election.

GAM said its rules, ratified by the head of the municipal committee, Abdul Halim Kilani, prohibited any sort of promotional campaigns prior to the date of the beginning of the candidacy registration period on Saturday.

Candidates also need to obtain prior permission from GAM before putting up campaign posters.

The municipality warned that it would remove illegal campaign posters from the streets and charge the candidates’ campaigns for the cost of removal, plus 25 per cent as administrative costs.

The backing of the posters must be made out of light but tough material, the GAM announcement said, eliminating wood and metal from the available options.

The regulations allow hopefuls to erect posters on roundabouts, intersections, open plazas and traffic lights, provided they do not obstruct traffic and are less than 1.5 metres tall and one metre wide.

They forbid affixing posters to buildings in a way that “distorts their image”.

GAM rules state that posters hung above areas used by either vehicles or pedestrians must leave 4.5 metres clearance below the bottom of the sign.

Posters also must not block street signs or other campaign posters.

The regulations require each candidate to pay JD4,000 in cash or by cheque as a “good campaign implementation” guarantee.

Candidates must remove all their posters within 72 hours after election day or forfeit the guarantee to GAM.

As per the Elections Law, candidates are not allowed to post their banners or pictures within public buildings.

GAM added that any special terms and conditions issued by the Independent Elections Commission should be followed as well.
