Ammon News - MAFRAQ (Petra)UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has thanked Jordan for bearing the brunt for receiving more Syrian refugees and for keeping border open for Syrian refugees.
The UN chief added on Friday during a press conference in the Zaatari refugee camp in Mafraq, Jordan, that half million Syrians have already left to neighboring countries while there were two million displaced people inside.
Ban highlighted the plight of Syrian refugees and the urgent need for humanitarian help as the United Nations is not receiving half of the required humanitarian assistance to relief the refugees.
"We cannot close our eyes while people are suffering and dying. We have to help them, that’s why I am there," he said.
"I count on the Jordanian government to keep borders open for Syrian refugees. I appeal all sides and particularly the Syrian government to stop the violence in the name of humanity."he said.
He urged all sides of the conflict to stop violence, adding that he is working hard with peace envoy Lakhdar Ibrahimi to bring peaceful transition in Syria.
During his tour in the camp, the UN chief was briefed on services extended to the refugees in the Zaatari refugee camp.
So far, Jordan has received more than 250,000 Syrian refugees despite the Kingdom's economic and financial hardships.
