AMMONNEWS - Ayman Safadi, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, and Pierre Krahenbuhl, Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) stressed the importance of continuing to work together with international partners to provide political and financial support for the agency.

During a meeting, Safadi and Krahenbuhl agreed on a work program to be implemented in coordination with partners in the international community to make up the expected deficit in the agency's budget for this year which estimated to reach $200 million.

Safadi affirmed the importance of providing the necessary financial support to the UNRWA to ensure the continuation of its services to more than five million refugees, to assert that the international community is still committed to meeting the rights of refugees in accordance with international resolutions, especially resolution number 194.

He said the lack of support for UNRWA would deprive 570,000 Palestinian students of their right to education and millions of sick people from treatment and the needy from aid, and will increase tension in the region, which threatens international stability and security.

The two sides lauded the international community's positive support of the relief agency. Last year, a number of countries managed to reduce the deficit from about $446 million to a remarkable less than $20 million.

The meeting tackled means to implement the recommendations of the Stockholm meeting, which was held at the joint invitation of Jordan and Sweden, and was attended by representatives of several countries, including the European Union, who stressed the importance of raising awareness of the need to reduce the gap in the agency's budget.

The Stockholm gathering also touched on resolving the issues of refugees in the framework of a comprehensive political solution to the conflict on the basis of international legitimacy resolutions.

The Commissioner-General of UNRWA expressed his deep appreciation for the efforts led by the Kingdom in supporting the agency and protecting the rights of Palestinian refugees.
