FM : Jordan continues efforts to achieve ceasefire in southern Syria

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Ayman Safadi, affirmed the continuity of Jordan's efforts and contacts aimed at a ceasefire in southern Syria and providing protection and assistance to the Syrian people on their land.

Safadi stressed, during his meeting with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York, that the international community should shoulder its responsibilities towards the Syrian people, pointing out that Jordan will continue to provide all that is possible for the Syrian people and that others must shoulder their responsibilities as well.

Safadi and Guterres stressed the strong partnership between the Kingdom and the United Nations in meeting the needs of Syrian refugees in Jordan.

On Palestine, the two diplomats discussed the latest developments related to the Palestinian cause, with Safadi reiterating Jordan's firm stance that calls for ending the Israeli occupation and establishing an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital as the only way for achieving a last and comprehensive peace.

Supporting UNRWA was figured high during the meeting between the two diplomats.

In a statement to the press, Safadi said that Jordan is contacting with all stakeholders to reach a ceasefire in southern Syria.

Responding to a question on a meeting with Russian foreign minister, Safadi said : " What we want is to end fighting, and after that finding a mechanism which guarantees what have been agreed upon in the de-escalation agreement." On border closure decision, Safadi said: " You know that we have 1.3 million Syrians in Jordan which reached its capacity." Safadi called on the international community to find mechanisms to provide protection and aid to Syrians on their land.
