King, Abbas discuss Palestinian reconciliation agreement

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - His Majesty King Abdullah II and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas held Sunday talks on the latest developments related to the Palestinian issue.

Bilateral and extended talks, attended by senior officials from both countries, dealt with the Palestinian reconciliation agreement, reached recently in Cairo.

King Abdullah voiced Jordan's full support to the agreement, which would contribute to strengthening Palestinian unity.

The King said the reconciliation agreement is an important step in pushing forward the peace process and re-launching serious and effective negotiations between the Palestinians and Israelis on the basis of the two-state solution that would lead to establishing an independent Palestinian state on the June 4, 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.

His Majesty emphasized that the Palestinian issue is the central issue and the core of the conflict in the region, and is always a top priority for the Kingdom's foreign policy.

The talks focused on the importance of working with the U.S. administration to resolve the conflict and make progress on the ground in the coming period, especially in view of the of the U.S. President Donald Trump's commitment to working towards achieving peace between Palestinian and Israeli.

The talks also tackled the situation in Jerusalem and the need to respect the historical and legal status in the holy city.

In this regard, King Abdullah stressed that Jordan, in accordance with the Hashemite custodianship of Islamic and Christian holy sites in the holy city, continues to play its historical role in protecting Jerusalem's holy shrines.

The meeting also reviewed regional developments and efforts to find political solutions to crises in the region.

President Abbas expressed appreciation for Jordan continued efforts, under the leadership of His Majesty the King, in defending the Palestinian issue and supporting the Palestinian people's rights in all international forums.

After the talks, President Abbas said in a press statement that his talks with His Majesty the King dealt with the Palestinian national reconciliation and the agreement signed in Cairo, pointing out that he briefed King Abdullah on the agreement's details, and lauded the King's efforts to support the Palestinian issue.
