Cabinet approves smart IDs cards project

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Cabinet on Wednesday approved the implementation of the IDs smart cards project in 2016 through two phases that include registering citizens' details at the Civil Status and Passports Department and issuing the smart cards.

Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Majd Shuweika, said the project is of vital importance and citizens shall feel its advantages.

The card will contain basic information for citizens, the minister said, noting that the government will announce mechanism of citizens' registering and the issuance of 5 million cards in 2016.

She said that the smart card will be a substitute for all the documents that are currently carried by citizens such as the ID card and the driving license.

The minister stressed the importance of this project, which is being implemented in cooperation with all stakeholders, indicating it will adopt initially the handprint but in the future the iris recognition will be introduced.

Also, the most important specifications of the card is that it cannot be forged and contains the best safety standards, she added.
