Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament Atef Tarawneh said that Middle East has been living in a state of insecurity and instability since the occupation of Palestine in 1948 and the Arab-Israeli war in 1967.

Delivering Jordan's speech at the 4th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Tarawneh said the state of instability continued with wars and terrorists attacks in the region by terror organizations that took a heavy toll on the region and its peoples.

"We in Jordan, with the awareness of His Majesty King Abdullah II and the work of constitutional bodies, believe that we need democracy to achieve the aspirations of our people, and have carried out reforms since the beginning of the millennium," he added.

The speaker said that youths comprise 70 percent of the Jordanian society, noting that this requires efforts to provide this generation with job opportunities, protect them from poverty and terrorism and arm them with knowledge. "The recent Global Forum on Youth which was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Hussein Bin Abdullah, is an indication of our endeavors in this regard," he added.

Tarawneh urged the international community to support Jordan that is hosting 1.5 million Syrian refugees, who are placing an increasing pressure on the Kingdom's infrastructure and economy .
