Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Speaker of the Lower House of Parliament, Atef Tarawneh, said that Jordan has made major efforts in the past few years to fight terrorism to preserve the nation’s security, as well as Arab and regional security.
Delivering Jordan's remarks during a plenary session at the International Parliamentary Union meetings that began in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, the speaker said that Islam embraces the values of peace and moderation, adding that Islamic history is witness to that.
Tarawneh highlighted the need to fight terrorism and extremism, which he said threaten social values, security, stability and development, noting that development cannot be achieved if societies do not enjoy security.
He also spoke about challenges facing the Kingdom in the security, political and development fields, adding that Jordan is located in a region that faces security and military crises, such as in Syria and Iraq.
Tarawneh stressed the importance of arriving at a just solution to the Palestinian issue through the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state. He also pointed to the burden being shouldered by the Kingdom as a result of hosting some 1.5 million Syrian refugees.
