Majali, Guterres discuss repercussions of Syrian crisis on Jordan

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Interior Minister Hussein Majali on Wednesday discussed with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, the main impact of Syrian crisis locally and regionally and the repercussions of hosting Syrian refugees in the Kingdom.

Majali reviewed the efficacy of the Syrian crisis on the Kingdom in educational, health, economic security and social fields.

Majali clarified that the number of students has noticeably increased in the Kingdom's schools while there was a shortage of teachers and administrative staff.

"The Ministry of Education has resorted to a two-shift system to deal with the large number of students in classrooms," he said.

The Minister also pointed to the shortage of hospitals, health clinics, medical staff and medicines while the number of patients has gone up, in addition to bringing the Syrian labor force instead of Jordanians in many professions, which negatively affects the standard of living of the local citizens.

Majali said that the number of Syrians in Jordan is 1.4 million, of which 640,000 are registered as refugees.

Guterres praised Jordan's position regarding the Syrian crisis, stressing that the Commission is constantly seeking to develop its projects in the Kingdom and increase the volume of aid for refugees to enable Jordan to deal with the crisis and overcome the challenges and difficulties faced by its economy.
