AMMONNEWS - Amal Ghabayen - Police on Sunday afternoon dispersed large crowds who gathered near the First Circle in Jabal Amman to watch the "Lettuce Lady." The Lettuce Lady's presence on Rainbow Street caused a major traffic jam in the area causing police to follow the girl, dressed in lettuce leaves, who had escaped to one of the nearby restaurants, eye witnesses told 'Ammon News.' Police escorted the Lettuce Lady out of the restaurant and took her to Zahran Police Station in an attempt to alleviate the traffic jam and large crowds, and because the woman did not have a permit to demonstrate in public. The lady appeared in Rainbow Street wearing a full-length dress made of lettuce leaves carrying a sign reading "Let Vegetarianism Grow on You." According to a statement received by 'Ammon News' on Saturday, a member of PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) will appear in Jabal Amman to encourage Jordanians to follow a vegetarian diet. PETA's Lettuce Ladies appear in various countries with the aim of drawing attention to the suffering of billions of animals are raised and killed for food consumption. Story continues below

"The consumption of meat, eggs and dairy products is the number one cause of climate change and a major contributor to resource depletion, pollution and even world hunger," the statement by PETA Asia Pacific said. "Waste, antibiotics and pesticides from factory farms and slaughterhouses contaminate water sources. Farmed animals produce 13 billion metric tons of excrement a year that's 48 times as much as the world's human population. Much of the world's water supply is quietly being diverted to animal agriculture even desert nations in Africa and the Middle East are pouring what little water they have into meat production. Each day, animal agriculture consumes a shocking 2.5 trillion litres of water enough for everyone in the world to take eight showers," the statement added. Animals raised for food also consume nearly 1 billion metric tons of food edible by humans every year that's enough to feed about half the world's population. It takes up to 16 kilograms of grain to produce just 1 kilogram of meat. By raising animals for food, we're condemning people around the world to starvation. Most animals raised for food are confined to filthy, crowded enclosures and denied everything that is natural and important to them. On today's factory farms, chickens and turkeys have their throats cut while they're still conscious, piglets are castrated and have their tails cut off without being given any painkillers and cows are hung upside down and are often skinned while they're still able to feel pain. "We're asking people to turn over a new leaf and go vegetarian", says Jordan's Lettuce Lady Amina Tareq. "With so many delicious alternatives to meat available, it's easier than ever to enjoy great food without causing animal suffering." ** For more photos, follow: ammon
