Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A number of Syrian refugees on Tuesday gathered in the Zatari desert refugee camp for Syrians amid heavy presence of gendarmerie forces in anticipation of any riots.
International relief organizations working in the camp were asked to evacuate after reports that elements linked to Syrian armed groups are operating or are being harbored in the camp, Ammon News learned.
Media outlets reported on Monday that Jordanian authorities arrested four Syrian nationals who were armed with weapons and surveillance equipment, suspected of attempting to carry out acts to cause chaos and disruption of order.
Public Security Directorate (PSD) spokesperson, Lt. Col. Mohammad Khatib denied the reports, noting that international organization cadres evacuated the camp after the crowding of Syrian refugees.
Riots had erupted Monday night at the Zatari desert refugee camp for Syrians after strong winds caused a power outage and damaged several tents amidst dusty conditions.
UNHCR Director of Cooperation and International Relations Ali Bibi told Ammon News Monday night that the agency is working to fix the tents damaged by weather conditions, noting that some refugees may be relocated to new tents if necessary.
He noted that the agency and supporting organization are working their best to prepare for the conditions of winter, which are expected to be harsh given the location of the camp in the desert of Mafraq in eastern Jordan.
