Riots Erupt in Southern Amman in Protest of Price Hikes

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - A protest against the Jordanian government's recent decision to raise fuel prices held in Al Mgablain district south of Amman turned into riots late Saturday night with residents blocking the main highway and setting public property ablaze.

Protesters threw rocks and fired gunshots in the air expressing anger at what they considered the government's continued antagonism towards citizens.

They chanted slogans against the government, holding it responsible for the endemic corruption plaguing the country and overbearing budget deficit - according to their expression.

A police officer was injured during the riots, eye witnesses reported.
