House approves parties law as referred from Senate

07-06-2012 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Lower House of Parliament on Wednesday approved the draft political parties law as referred from the Senate although the House's Legal Committee rejected most amendments made by the Senate.

Major amendments made by the Senate pertains to the number of the founding members of the party, which should not be less than 500 for each party.

Last month a majority of senators insisted that the minimum number of founding members required to form a political party be raised to 500 and not 250 as proposed by the former government and later approved by the Lower House.

The majority of Lower House members approved the Senate's amendments, saying that it is designed to a true party life.

Deputies who rejected amendments made by the Senate said raising the number of founders to 500 will put restrictions on freedom to form parties.

The law was approved during a session chaired by House Speaker Abdul Karim Dughmi and attended by Acting Prime Minister Abdul Salam Abbadi and Cabinet members.
