Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan said on Tuesday it will take part in an international conference in Tunisia on the deadly unrest in Syria, while insisting the kingdom is against foreign military intervention.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said he will attend the “friends of Syria” conference in Tunis on Friday aimed at finding ways to end the Syrian regime’s bloody repression of protests.

“Jordan does not interfere in any country’s affairs. It supports Arab consensus on Syria and rejects military intervention in the country,” Judeh told Jordanian senators at a meeting.

“The security, stability and unity of Syria and its people must be preserved.”

Arab, European and US diplomats are also set to take part in the meeting.

“The fact that Jordan’s ambassador in Syria is still there (in Damascus) does not mean the kingdom is satisfied with developments on the ground. We are against violence and bloodshed,” Judeh said.

Earlier this month, the six Gulf Cooperation Council states decided to expel Syria’s envoys and withdraw their own from Damascus over the “mass slaughter” of civilians in Syria.

The announcement came after France, Italy, Spain, Britain and Belgium said they were bringing back their envoys for consultations. The United States has closed its Damascus embassy.

At least 6,000 people have been killed in a crackdown on pro-democracy protests by President Bashar al-Assad’s forces since March last year, according to monitoring groups.
