Jordanian laws guarantee fair trial for Qatadah, Majali

11-02-2012 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Jordan said it will contest a European Court of Human Rights ban on Britain extraditing Islamist cleric Omar Othman, better known as Abu Qatada, who is wanted in Jordan in connection with two 1998 attacks.

The court ruled that Britain cannot deport the 51-year-old Jordanian because of doubts he might have a fair trial in Jordan.

Minister of State for Media Affairs and Communications and official government spokesman, Rakan al-Majali, said Jordan will contest in writing the European decision, pledging to offer every guarantee of a fair trial in the kingdom.

He said constitutional reforms instituted last year in Jordan prohibit all forms of torture or physical or psychological abuse in the country and also would not take credit of any confessions under torture or intimidation.

"The Jordanian government will follow up this case, from its various aspects, with all relevant foreign authorities according to valid rules in that regard," added Majali.
