House lambasts Islamist ‘military parade’

03-01-2012 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Lower House on Monday issued a statement denouncing what it called the “provocative military parade” organised by the Islamists in downtown Amman last Friday.

In its statement, a copy of which was sent to The Jordan Times yesterday, the Chamber of Deputies harshly criticised the Islamists’ of force, saying it “turned the peaceful calls demanding reform into an ideological and military movement that is not based on dialogue and respect of opinion and the law”.

In addition, the House denounced statements by some Islamist leaders calling for greater escalation and making what it said were threats against public institutions.

The statement called on the Islamists to fully engage in political activity and the comprehensive reform process and avoid “escalation, blackmail… and military shows”.

Emphasising that the people’s right to peaceful expression is guaranteed by the Constitution and law, the House called on the Islamists to resort to reason and moderation, stressing that nations are built by participation and dialogue, not militant behaviour and threats.

Over 5,000 Islamists converged in downtown Amman on Friday in response to an attack against a Muslim Brotherhood-led march in Mafraq the previous week.
