AMMONNEWS - A court in Amman rejected on Wednesday another bail petition filed by the defence team of ex-mayor of Amman, Omar Maani, who is charged with “failure to perform his official duties”, one of his lawyers said.

Maani, who served as mayor between 2006-2011, was indicted the day before by Deputy Attorney General Judge Rami Salah on the backdrop of a probe into several files related to the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM).

The ex-mayor of Amman, Omar Maani, was apprehended on Tuesday as a public prosecutor decided to detain him for 15 days pending investigation into charges of abuse of public office.

Judges later on Tuesday considered releasing the ex-chief of Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) on bail after public prosecutor Rami Salah ordered his detention for 15-days at Al Juwaideh Correctional and Rehabilitation Center, judicial sources told Ammon News.

The sources added that the request for release on bail, submitted by Maani's lawyers, requires the approval of two judges.

Corruption didn't start with the recent mayors of Amman, including Maani. Due to the long absence of transparency and accountability, it has a long history! I was fascinated by Jack O'Connell's book: "King's Counsel" (2011), where he credibly details his work in Jordan and for Jordan since the mid 1950s till his death last year. After reading the book, I became better informed about the great things that the late great King Hussein did or tried to do, in secret and in public, for Jordan. But, in the book, it was clear that one person played and continuous to play to this date, behind the scenes and in public, a major role in Jordan's history. That guy is indeed a "long history" of bad--and good--things. But who dares to investigate him!?

mayor Maani is a very decent and loyal jordanian public figure. he has done his best to turn Amman to a modern livable city to the best of his knowledge . We are very astonished of such accusation to an honorable man such as Mayor Maani, he does not worth such treatment
