Military Tribunal Releases 16 Arrested in Salt Riots

30-11-2011 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The State Security Court (SSC) on Tuesday released 16 residents of Salt out of a total of 32 individuals arrested during the riots that took place on Sunday.

A security source told Ammon News that the military tribunal released the 16 young men a day after it released 13 others who were arrested when riots and violence re-erupted in the city of Salt, north of Amman, following a fight between students belonging to two tribes in Al Balqaa' Applied University.

The young men were released after Salt Member of Parliament Khaled Hiyari intervened for their release after rioters threatened to renew riots if the detained individuals are not released.

Security forces on Tuesday were present surrounding the BAU campus to help prevent any possible renewal of violence or clashes between the two groups.

Rioters on Sunday had vandalized vehicles, burnt tires and trees, vandalized public and private property and clashed with Gendarmerie and security forces after the fight that originated inside the university campus extended to reach the city of Salt.
