30 Injured in Riots in Salhoob 'Video'

17-10-2011 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - Over 30 people were injured in riots that erupted Saturday afternoon in Salhoob, north of Amman to prevent holding a political activity.

Local young individuals attacked a tent where pro-reform activists were holding a rally to demand accelerated reforms and to combat corruption.

Witnesses said gunshots were fired by the attackers but there were no reports of injuries as a result. However, some were wounded in brawls that ensued, eyewitnesses told The Jordan Times.

President of the National Front for Reform Ahmad Obeidat, a former premier and intelligence chief, was attacked while heading to the location of the event, the eyewitnesses said.

After the disruption, the activists moved to the headquarters of Jordan Professional Associations in Amman where they held a press conference condemning the attack by “thugs”, the term they use to describe their opponents.

The organisers of the rally described themselves as “sons of Jordanian tribes” who insisted that they only meant to peacefully call for reform and more decisive anti-corruption measures.

Members of the Bani Hassan tribe, believed to be the largest clan in the Kingdom, had issued a statement threatening to prevent the planned rally in Salhoub, one of their villages, and warning the Muslim Brotherhood against taking part in it.

But the Islamist group issued a statement distancing itself from the function, as organisers confirmed that the Brotherhood was not involved.
