Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Jordanian Senate on Thursday decided to cancel its last session of the extraordinary session which was scheduled to deliberate on the 2011 amended Anti-Corruption Commission Law that was passed by the Lower House of Parliament on Tuesday.
According to constitutional texts, the parliament (both Upper and Lower Houses) will not be able to deliberate on the law as the extraordinary session adjourns effective on Friday.
The Senate Legal Affairs Committee had on Wednesday endorsed the Lower House's amendments to controversial Article 23 of the Anti-Corruption Commission law, along with the all other articles of the law as referred to it from the House deputies.
The House's endorsement of Article 23 caused a public opinion uproar over what is perceived as a measure to restrict press freedoms.
Article 23 of the Anti-Corruption Commission law stipulates that every person or party that publicly or explicitly attaches charges of corruption to others without lawful facts with the purpose of extortion, slander or defamation and character assassination will be fined no less than JD30,000 and no more than JD60,000”.
Later on Thursday, A Royal Decree was issued adjourning the Parliament's extraordinary session as of Friday, September 30, 2011.
Another decree was also issued today postponing the Parliament's ordinary session until October 26.
