Parliamentary Bloc Demands Clarification Over CBJ Governor Resignation

20-09-2011 12:00 AM

Ammon News - AMMONNEWS - The Parliamentary Bloc for Change and Justice on Tuesday demanded from the government clarification over the decision to oust the Governor of the Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) Faris Sharaf.

The Bloc issued a statement Tuesday stressing the parliamentary's role in oversight over the government's performance, threatening to the vote of confidence in the government if it does not provide credible justification for the decision.

The Bloc stated it's "bewilderment" over the decision to oust Sharaf 10 months after he was appointed on a five-year appointment, noting that the CBJ law restricts the decision to oust the governor to particular cases related to the governor's transgressions or abuse of power.

"It is our right as citizens first, and as members of the Parliament to monitor the government's performance and to learn of the implications that led to this decision, which has opened doors for interpretations that offend the government and the state," the statement said.

The Bloc cited the move as obstructive to the reform process and the government's ability to move reform forward.

"We do not know Sharif Faris personally, but we know of his honorable professional record, from his protection of the funds of the poor in the Social Security Corporation to his denial of permits for banks owned by individuals with connections, and his referral of dangerous money laundering cases to the Public Prosecution," the statement added.

The statement demanded from Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit's government clarification over the decision, for an "absence of a clear narrative puts the government's credibility in question, which leads us as a parliamentary bloc to practice our constitutional right to confidence in the government."

The statement comes hours after Senator Laila Sharaf, Sharif Faris Sharaf's mother and wife of former Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Sharaf, announced her resignation from the Upper House of Parliament, citing her unwillingness to serve in a "corrupt state."
