AMMONNEWS - Secretary General of IIMSAM, the Intergovernmental Institution for the Use of Micro-Algae Spirinula against Malnutrion, Remigio Maradonna, has stated that he didn't know the background connected to business tycoon Khaled Shaheen when the latter was appointed to the organisation and received a diplomatic passport.

He also noted that Shaheen had made a generous donation to IIMSAM which prompted the organisation to appoint him.

In this regard, Jordanian National and Executive Director of IIMSAM Dr. Naseer Shaher al-Hamoud told Ammon News that it was organisation's responsibility to try to win back public confidence and not to take receipt of funding for combating poverty and malnutrition across the world at the expense of the Jordanian people.

"The populace are currently overseeing reform steps to combat corruption which is the causes around a third of citizens to be under the poverty line," he added.

Hamud advised the Jordanian government that if it wanted to retrieve Shaheen it could make use of the bilateral agreement linking it to the organisation after IIMSAM's conference in Amman at the end of last year.

Hamud appeared on the BBC Sunday night to discuss the issue.

Shaheen was convicted by the State Security Court in mid 2010 of bribery in the Jordan Petroleum Refinery Co. expansion project, and was sentenced to three years in prison, along with three JPRC officials.

The Jordanian government gave Shaheen permission in February 2011 to travel abroad to the United States under the pretext of seeking medical care. Media reports however revealed that he was seen dining in a high-end London restaurant with his family, and that his entry visa into the US was revoked following his conviction.

His permission to travel caused a major public opinion uproar that marred Prime Minister Marouf Bakhit's government, culminating in the resignation of former Ministers of Justice and Health last month, citing ethical responsibility for Shaheen's release from prison.
