WFP provides aid to 78,000 refugees in Jordan in September

21-10-2026 09:28 AM

Ammon News - The World Food Programme (WFP) provided food assistance to approximately 78,000 refugees living in camps across Jordan in September, at a reduced rate of $21, equivalent to JD 15 per person per month, amid funding challenges affecting its operations, according to a WFP report.

The report stated that the current assistance amount covers only part of beneficiaries’ food needs. The programme distributed $1.2 million in cash assistance during September 2026.

The report added that the WFP had begun preparations to temporarily resume monthly assistance in October for a specific group of the most vulnerable refugee households in host communities, following a six-month suspension of cash assistance for this group due to severe funding shortages.

Refugees receiving assistance in host communities, along with those residing in the Zaatari and Azraq camps, will receive support at the current reduced rate of $21, equivalent to JD 15 per person per month.

According to the report, the WFP’s net funding requirements for the next six months, from October 2026 through March 2027, amount to $42.4 million.

In the education sector, the WFP resumed its school feeding programme in cooperation with the Ministry of Education at the start of the new academic year. The programme will reach 510,000 students in refugee camps and host communities by providing healthy meals and fortified date bars.

As part of its efforts to support livelihoods and strengthen community resilience, the WFP continued providing vocational and technical training in the Azraq and Zaatari camps. Preparations have been completed for the third cohort, comprising 249 participants registered for vocational training in the two camps.

The programme is also working to provide training, post-training pathways and referrals for 600 participants in host communities across four governorates.

In the area of food security, the WFP, in partnership with the Higher Council for Food Security, supported the launch of Jordan’s first national food waste awareness campaign under the slogan “Value It, Don’t Waste It.” The campaign aims to promote responsible consumption and reduce food waste nationwide.

The report explained that the campaign is based on findings from a national food waste study conducted by the Higher Council for Food Security and the Department of Statistics. It seeks to encourage behavioural change and raise awareness of the economic, social and environmental consequences of food waste.

The WFP said it continues to provide unconditional food assistance to the most vulnerable refugees, alongside technical support to strengthen social protection programmes and national systems. The programme is prioritising education and nutrition initiatives while expanding interventions designed to build resilience.
