05-10-2026 08:58 AM

Ammon News - Jordan and the world are marking World Teachers’ Day on Monday, a global occasion that highlights the vital role teachers play in shaping individuals, building future generations, and advancing education amid ongoing transformations in the sector.

This year’s observance coincides with the 60th anniversary of the 1966 International Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers, at a time when education systems are undergoing rapid changes driven by technological advancement and the shift toward new learning models. These developments require continuous investment in teachers’ skills, professional standing, and supportive working environments.

World Teachers’ Day has been celebrated annually on October 5 since 1994, commemorating the adoption of the 1966 recommendation on teachers’ status.

Globally, education systems are expected to face a shortage of 44 million additional primary and secondary school teachers by 2030, according to UNESCO. The challenge extends beyond numbers, encompassing teacher training, professional development, and improved working conditions.

146,000 Teachers in Jordan

In Jordan, there are approximately 146,000 teachers working across the Kingdom’s schools. The Ministry of Education employs around 66% of all teachers, while 29.2% work in the private sector. The remainder are employed by UNRWA schools and other institutions, including military schools.

Women make up 69.5% of all teachers nationwide, with the proportion rising to 89.2% in private schools.

The Ministry of Education continues efforts to improve the educational environment and legislative framework supporting teachers, while enhancing their academic and professional competencies in line with educational modernization goals and Jordan’s Economic Modernization Vision.

Education experts stressed that teachers remain the cornerstone of the learning process. Their role now extends beyond delivering knowledge to mentoring students, shaping character, promoting values and national belonging, and developing critical thinking, creativity, and problem-solving skills.

They noted that rapid changes in education—particularly technological advancements and digital learning—require ongoing professional and academic development for teachers, enabling them to effectively integrate technology and modern teaching methods into classrooms.

Experts also emphasized the importance of creating supportive school environments, strengthening partnerships among educators, administrators, parents, and local communities, and reinforcing public trust in the teaching profession to improve educational quality and school performance.
