Modern Humans and the Spirit: A Scientific Reading Based on Geological, Biological, and Qur’anic Heritage

29-09-2026 01:01 PM

Muayad Al-Samaraee
1. Definition of the Problem
This report aims to present a comprehensive scientific reading that combines geological and biological heritage with the Qur’anic text, to establish that modern humans (Homo sapiens) are the ones into whom the divine spirit was breathed, and that they are the intended Adam or his accountable descendants; whereas ancient humans from among human-like beings were biological creatures without a divine spirit, unaccountable, limited in learning, spreading corruption and shedding blood by their nature, not by moral choice. The report also addresses the positions of the angels and Iblis in the scene of succession, their relation to the secret of the spirit and the limits of knowledge, how prayer and zakat are the basis for sustaining the spirit and its connection with the Creator, and how the Abrahamic imamate is the gathering point of all prophets and messengers, and that Muhammad ﷺ came to complete noble moral character, which is the essence of this imamate.

However, this definition is not sound unless we add to it a fundamental Qur’anic principle: Are those who know equal to those who do not know? God says: “Say, ‘Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.’” [Az-Zumar: 9]. This verse establishes that knowledge is not a superfluous perfection, but a fundamental distinction in honor and eligibility. Hence the central question in this problem becomes: If knowledge and wisdom are the criterion of preference, who is the human qualified for succession? Who was taught and thus deserved, and who was measured by matter and became arrogant?

This meaning is confirmed by His saying: “He gives wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good. And none will remember except those of understanding.” [Al-Baqarah: 269]. Wisdom is not merely accumulated information; it is knowledge coupled with insight, fear of God, and righteous action. God says: “Only those fear Allah, from among His servants, who have knowledge.” [Fatir: 28]. Wisdom, then, is what places knowledge in its proper place, makes its possessor submit to God, know his own limits, and not become arrogant because of his knowledge.

This explains the scene of succession deeply. Adam was not honored because he was stronger or older, but because he was taught: “And He taught Adam the names—all of them.” The angels were not lacking in worship, but they acknowledged the limits of their knowledge and said: “Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us.” Iblis was not lacking in knowledge, but he lacked wisdom, because he measured by matter and said: “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.” Knowledge without wisdom leads to arrogance; worship without knowledge remains limited; but knowledge with wisdom and submission is the path of succession.

Hence the problem is precisely defined: The difference between modern humans and ancient humans is not merely biological; it is a difference in the capacity to receive the spirit, in the ability to learn and analyze, and in attaining wisdom. The new human, if he forgets his Creator, forgets that within him is a spirit breathed by God, and so he lives at a lower level, like one who has no spirit. Therefore, prayer and zakat are the basis for sustaining the purity of the spirit and its connection with the Creator.

2. Extended Knowledge — It Does Not Stop at a Limit
Among the fundamental Qur’anic principles in this problem is that knowledge in the Qur’anic conception is not a static state, but an extended and continuous process that does not stop at a limit until its causes and purposes are complete. This is clearly manifested in the supplication of Abraham and Ishmael, peace be upon them, where their request was not limited to knowledge alone, but extended to requesting wisdom and purification, so that the building of the human qualified for succession might be complete. Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House and prayed: “Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom and purify them. Indeed, You are the Exalted in Might, the Wise.” [Al-Baqarah: 129]. This supplication carries within it an integrated method for building the human: recitation of the verses, then teaching the Book, then teaching wisdom, then purification. This is the knowledge that does not stop at a limit, because it is connected to wisdom, of which God said: “And whoever has been given wisdom has certainly been given much good.”

This extended knowledge is what made Abraham, peace be upon him, reach the station of imamate and friendship. God says: “And [mention, O Muhammad], when Abraham was tried by his Lord with commands and he fulfilled them. [Allah] said, ‘Indeed, I will make you a leader for the people.’” [Al-Baqarah: 124]. God described him as a nation, devoutly obedient to God, inclining toward truth, meaning he was a teacher of good, followed by the people of guidance. At-Tabari said: “Abraham, the friend of God, was a teacher of good, followed by the people of guidance, devoutly obedient, meaning obedient to God.” Then Abraham reached the peak when God took him as a friend: “And Allah took Abraham as a friend.” [An-Nisa: 125]. This links friendship, imamate, and succession closely, for Abraham is the friend whom God made an imam for people.

3. Geological Heritage — Mathematical Measurement Tools
Geological heritage provides precise measurement tools for the age of the Earth and life upon it. Uranium-238 is the parent element of a long decay chain, and its daughter isotopes have half-lives known with mathematical precision, such as uranium-234, whose half-life is 245,000 years; thorium-230, whose half-life is 75,700 years; and protactinium-231, whose half-life is 32,700 years. Age can be calculated from the ratio of daughter isotopes to the parent using radioactive decay equations, and this gave an age for the uranium-235 system reaching about 500,000 years. These mathematical calculations do not rely on estimation, but on physical constants measured with high precision, such as the decay constant of uranium-238, which is 1.55125 × 10⁻¹⁰ year⁻¹. This means that every million years a mathematically defined portion of uranium decays, and the remaining ratio can be measured precisely.

4. Thermoluminescence and Electron Spin Resonance Dating
Thermoluminescence dating is another technique based on a precise physical principle: when quartz or feldspar mineral is exposed to heat, electrons trapped in defects of the crystal lattice release stored energy in the form of light. The amount of emitted light can be measured to determine the time elapsed since the last exposure to heat. This technique was applied to burned flint fragments discovered at the Jebel Irhoud site in Morocco, and gave consistent ages around 300,000 years, with a weighted mean of 315 ± 34 thousand years. This means that the age of the fossils discovered at the site ranges between 281,000 and 349,000 years, a time period calculated mathematically through the weighted mean that takes into account the precision of each measurement. Electron spin resonance (ESR) was also used for dating and gave results consistent with thermoluminescence, which strengthens the accuracy of the dating.

5. Dating of Omo Kibish and Argon-Argon
At the Omo Kibish site in Ethiopia, argon-argon dating (⁴⁰Ar/³⁹Ar) was used on alkali feldspar crystals extracted from volcanic ash layers. These measurements gave an upper limit for the age of the fossils of 198 ± 14 thousand years, and a lower limit of 104 ± 7 thousand years. Using the weighted mean, the preferred age of the fossils was estimated at 195 ± 5 thousand years. This figure is not a random estimate, but the result of precise statistical calculations that take into account uncertainty in each measurement. This dating is considered the most accurate so far for anatomically modern humans.

6. Limits of Carbon-14 and Alternative Techniques
Carbon-14 is another dating tool, but it is limited by a clear mathematical constraint: after about 50,000 years, only a tiny proportion of carbon-14 remains that cannot be measured accurately. Carbon-14 has a half-life of 5,730 years, and after 50,000 years more than 99.9% of it has decayed. For this reason, studies that exceed 50,000 years rely on other techniques such as uranium-thorium, argon-argon, and thermoluminescence. This explains why we find different dates by different methods, all of which are mathematically consistent within known limits of precision.

7. Genetic Calculations — Mitochondrial Eve and Y-Chromosomal Adam
Genetic calculations provide an independent dating tool. The calculation of “Mitochondrial Eve” depends on measuring the mutation rate in mitochondrial DNA, then calculating the time required for the accumulation of genetic differences among current humans. Estimates indicate that Mitochondrial Eve lived about 155,000 years ago, with a range between 120,000 and 200,000 years. This calculation relies on a simple mathematical equation: Time = number of accumulated mutations ÷ mutation rate per generation × number of years per generation. The human mutation rate is estimated at about 1.1 × 10⁻⁸ per base pair per generation, a figure calculated from sequencing the genomes of complete families.

Similarly, the age of “Y-chromosomal Adam” (the most recent common male ancestor of all living men) was calculated using Y-chromosome mutation rates, and estimates ranged between 200,000 and 300,000 years. These calculations rely on the same mathematical principle: each generation adds a small number of mutations, and the accumulation of these mutations over thousands of generations gives a molecular clock that can be read. A recent study used Poisson regression models to calculate the mutation rate according to the age of the father and mother, and obtained a precise mathematical equation: paternal mutation rate = 6.05 + 1.51 × father’s age, and maternal mutation rate = 3.61 + 0.37 × mother’s age. These equations allow calculating the expected number of mutations in each generation, and thus calculating the geological time separating any two ancestors.

8. Ancient Genome and Time of Divergence
Ancient genome calculations provide additional evidence. Analysis of the mitochondrial DNA of Neanderthals showed that their common ancestor with modern humans lived about 465,000 years ago, with confidence intervals ranging between 317,000 and 741,000 years. This means that the Neanderthal line and the modern human line separated before this date, and that modern humans existed as an independent line since then. Analysis of the full Neanderthal genome estimated the time of divergence at about 825,000 years, based on a genetic divergence rate of 6.5 million years between humans and chimpanzees. These figures are all the result of complex mathematical calculations that take into account mutation rates and effective population sizes.

9. Modern Humans and the Emergence of Symbolic Behavior
If we link these calculations to the idea of breathing the spirit, we can say that anatomically modern humans appeared in Africa about 300,000 years ago, and this coincides with the emergence of symbolic behaviors such as burial of the dead, arts, and complex language. This chronological coincidence is not accidental; it indicates a fundamental change that occurred in this being. This change can be interpreted as the breathing of the spirit, which granted humans new cognitive and spiritual capacities. Ancient humans, such as Neanderthals, had a large brain (reaching 1,400 cm³ as in some Jebel Irhoud fossils), but the brain shape was not spherical like that of modern humans; it was elongated and flat. This difference in shape, along with the difference in behavior, indicates that something changed in the neural organization, and this thing could be the spirit and its exceptional effect, so that there became a difference between one who is prepared to receive the spirit and one who is not prepared for it.

10. The Angels’ Question — Confidence and Etiquette
In light of this scientific framework, the scene of succession in the Qur’anic text can be understood more deeply. The angels asked with confidence based on prior knowledge, observation, or inference, but they did not encompass God’s wisdom. God says: “And [mention, O Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, ‘Indeed, I will make upon the earth a successive authority.’ They said, ‘Will You place upon it one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?’ He said, ‘Indeed, I know that which you do not know.’” [Al-Baqarah: 30]. The angels saw ancient humans or previous creatures that spread corruption and shed blood, or were informed of that, so they compared the new successor to those who came before. They had a desire to win the position, because they said: “While we declare Your praise and sanctify You.” They thought that pure worship and constant glorification qualified them for succession. But God showed them that succession is not merely worship; it is knowledge, spirit, accountability, and trust. The angels, with the purity of their worship, were not distracted from prostrating to God’s command regarding the breathing of the spirit, but they do not possess the capacity for learning that God placed in humans from His spirit.

11. Iblis — Measuring by Matter and Forgetting the Secret of the Spirit
As for Iblis, he measured by matter, because he found that the worship and glorification proposed by the angels were not sufficient for that. He thought that succession is attained by matter, and said: “I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.” [Al-A’raf: 12]. He compared himself through the material of creation that God used, to prove scientifically to the Creator that he was suitable. But he erred, because matter is not the criterion, and the spirit is not matter. Both of them, and all creatures, have not and will not understand the secret of the spirit, because the spirit is from the command of God: “And they ask you, [O Muhammad], about the spirit. Say, ‘The spirit is of the command of my Lord. And you have not been given of knowledge except a little.’” [Al-Isra: 85]. Iblis, with his knowledge and analysis, was occupied by scientific analysis and self-confidence until he forgot that he was merely a creature, and this forgetting turned into disobedience to the Creator’s command to prostrate. Both of them aspired to honor from the Creator, with a difference in motives: the angels spread glorification and sanctification, while Iblis learned knowledge for formation, which is what God had enabled in him of knowledge, to place the Creator’s creativity in the exceptional movement of the jinn according to formative variables. Therefore, arrogance in his knowledge and himself afflicted him, and he forgot the power of his Creator.

12. Formative Neutrality in the New Human
Added to what has preceded is that the evolved creation of the human, in the sense of the divine formation that made modern humans different from ancient humans, granted him a formative neutrality toward authority. The new human, in his origin before temptation and deviant will intervene, does not seek authority for its own sake, nor reject it for its own sake, but stands toward it in a neutral position. This neutrality is not weakness, nor cowardice, but a characteristic of the formation that God willed in His new creature. God did not place in his first nature the lust for domination, nor the keenness to rise above others, nor the desire to subdue others. Rather, He made him capable of direction, willing by choice, accountable by obligation. This is what God made in His new creature, so that he would be a successor moving by knowledge and trust, not by conquest and supremacy.

13. Satan and the Exploitation of Neutrality
And from here begins Satan’s role. Satan, who saw in the new human this formative neutrality, tries to manipulate him. He cannot seduce the knowledgeable human who is firmly established, nor the balanced human who knows his Lord and knows his own limits. But he turns to the less knowledgeable among humans, beautifying for them what contradicts their nature, and drawing them little by little into practices similar to those of ancient humans. He transforms them from formative neutrality to a struggle for power, from the humility of a successor to the arrogance of a tyrant, and from reform on earth to corruption and bloodshed. Thus the human into whom the spirit was breathed becomes a being behaving as if he has no spirit, because he followed one who does not want good for him.

14. The Fate of Both Parties
Therefore the Creator, glorified and exalted, decreed that both Satan and his followers will fill Hell. God says: “He said, ‘Then the truth [is My oath], and the truth I say—[that] I will surely fill Hell with you and those of them that follow you all together.’” [Sad: 84-85]. And He says: “He said, ‘Go, and whoever follows you among them—indeed, Hell is the reward for you all, an ample reward.’” [Al-Isra: 63]. Satan fills Hell because he challenges the Creator’s project in His successor on earth. He does not object only to the creation of Adam; he objects to the entire idea of succession. He wants to prove that this creature is not suitable, that he is more deserving of honor, and that God’s project on earth will fail. As for the human who follows Satan, he possessed the spirit but acted at the level of one who has no spirit. The spirit of God was breathed into him, and he was given reason, will, and knowledge, but he chose to obey Satan, and to imitate ancient humans in their corruption and bloodshed, so he deserved to be with Satan in the Fire.

15. Forgetting the Creator and Forgetting the Spirit
From here the seriousness of the human forgetting his Creator becomes clear. If the human forgets his Lord, he forgets that within him is a spirit breathed by God, and thus he will live at a lower level, like those whom the Creator described as having been transformed into apes. God says: “And you had already known about those who transgressed among you concerning the Sabbath, and We said to them, ‘Be apes, despised.’” [Al-Baqarah: 65]. And He says: “Say, ‘Shall I inform you of [what is] worse than that as penalty from Allah? [It is that of] those whom Allah has cursed and with whom He became angry and made of them apes and pigs and slaves of taghut. Those are worse in position and further astray from the sound way.’” [Al-Ma’idah: 60]. These are those who forgot their Creator, followed their desires, and transgressed against God’s command, so they descended to a level lower than that of the honored human. This transformation is not merely physical metamorphosis; it is a spiritual and moral metamorphosis, where they lost the effect of the spirit within them, and lived without accountability or responsibility, like creatures that have no spirit.

Therefore the Creator said that He honored the children of Adam with the spirit connected to His favor, and commanded us to pray and give zakat to sustain the purity of the spirit and righteous action. Prayer and zakat are the basis for sustaining the spirit and its connection with the Creator. Turning away from them is the opposite, that is, the spirit’s disconnection from its source. Therefore God described Himself as being free of need of His servants’ worship, but He commanded us to do it out of mercy for us, because we are the ones in need of prayer and zakat to sustain our spirit connected to our Creator. God says: “O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.” [Fatir: 15]. And He says: “Indeed, Allah is Free of need from the worlds.” [Al-Ankabut: 6]. God is free of need of us, but we are the ones in need of Him. From here, usury (riba) came as one whom Satan has afflicted with madness, because it cuts the human off from mercy and justice, and makes him live at a purely material level, far from the spirit. God says: “Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity.” [Al-Baqarah: 275]. Usury is not merely a forbidden financial transaction; it is a state of spiritual confusion, loss of balance, and disconnection from the light of God.

Here the human understands that he is in need of prayer and zakat to sustain his spirit connected to his Creator, and to go far from disobedience to the Creator’s command. Prayer is connection, and zakat is purification, and both together preserve for the human his spirit from extinction, and preserve for him his humanity from descending to the level of one who has no spirit.

16. The Abrahamic Imamate — Unity of the Method and Universality of the Milla
From here a decisive Qur’anic truth is established: There is no imam other than Abraham, and no milla other than his. God says: “And who would be averse to the religion of Abraham except one who makes a fool of himself.” [Al-Baqarah: 130]. This is a question containing denial and exclusion, meaning: none turns away from the Hanif religion of Abraham except a fool who wrongs himself. Turning away from this milla is only an effect of ignorance, foolishness, and recklessness. God commanded His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to follow the milla of Abraham, saying: “Then We revealed to you, [O Muhammad], to follow the religion of Abraham, inclining toward truth; and he was not of those who associate with Allah.” [An-Nahl: 123]. Ibn Kathir said: “The Almighty says, commanding His Prophet ﷺ, the master of the messengers, to inform of what God has blessed him with of following the Hanif religion of Abraham.” The scholars said: “God did not command His Messenger ﷺ to follow the milla of any prophet other than him.” The milla of Abraham is the comprehensive milla that God accepts no other than, and it is the tolerant Hanifism with which Muhammad ﷺ came as a confirmation of Abraham’s call.

This Abrahamic imamate was not limited to Abraham alone, but extended to his family and descendants. The Qur’an indicated this in the story of Abraham’s guests from the angels, where they said to him and his wife: “The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy and Honorable.” [Hud: 73]. The family of Abraham are the people of the house whom mercy and blessings encompassed. Therefore the Abrahamic prayer/blessing came, which the Prophet ﷺ taught his community, to link prayer upon Muhammad and his family with prayer upon Abraham and his family. He ﷺ said: “Say: O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Abraham and upon the family of Abraham.” And in another narration: “O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and his wives and his descendants as You sent blessings upon the family of Abraham.” Prayer upon the family of Abraham is an established principle in the tashahhud, and it is evidence that the family of Abraham have a special station of divine honor. And the station of his prayer to God is the station of our prayer, because we follow him in our prayer as God commanded us, and we send blessings upon his family as we send blessings upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ. Prayer joins us, Abraham, and his family in one station of honor and purification.

Here a fundamental point becomes clear: Knowledge is extended and does not stop, and the method of succession is one. Abraham prayed that a messenger be sent among his descendants to teach them the Book and wisdom, and God answered his prayer, so the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was the manifestation of this call, and he is from the descendants of Abraham and Ishmael. This means that the method of succession is one; it begins with Adam, extends through Abraham, and reaches its peak in the seal of the prophets, Muhammad ﷺ. All of them carried the banner of knowledge, wisdom, and purification, and all of them called to what God wants on earth. Succession is not an honor granted to one with static knowledge, but a responsibility granted to one who carries extended knowledge, wisdom, purification, and continuous connection with the Creator.

If Abraham asked for knowledge, wisdom, and purification, then the role of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not limited to what Abraham and Ishmael asked for; it went beyond that to what is greater. He ﷺ came to complete noble moral character, saying: “I was only sent to complete noble moral character.” God praised him, saying: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” [Al-Qalam: 4]. The greatest purpose of his mission ﷺ is not merely conveying rulings, but teaching the great moral character that is the fruit of knowledge, wisdom, and purification. The Qur’an contains what indicates that the goal of following the Prophet ﷺ is to acquire his character. God says: “There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern.” [Al-Ahzab: 21]. And He says: “And whatever the Messenger has given you—take; and what he has forbidden you—refrain from.” [Al-Hashr: 7]. Whoever follows Muhammad ﷺ has followed his character, and whoever follows his character has followed the milla of Abraham, because great moral character is the essence of Hanifism.

The true identity of one who follows Muhammad ﷺ is not in appearance or slogan, but in character. He ﷺ said: “The heaviest thing placed in the scales is good character.” And he said: “Nothing is heavier in the believer’s scales on the Day of Resurrection than good character.” The believer who follows Muhammad ﷺ is known by his character, not by his claim. All other rulings, acts of worship, and transactions came through the books of God, His messengers, and His prophets, from Adam to Abraham to Moses to Jesus to Muhammad ﷺ. All of them conveyed God’s messages, all of them called to noble moral character, and all of them came with tolerant Hanifism. The religion is one, the milla is one, the imam is one, and the goal is one: worshiping God alone, acquiring noble moral character, and building the earth with justice and goodness.

There is no imam other than Abraham, no community other than the community of Abraham, and no milla other than his milla. God commanded His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to follow his milla, linked prayer upon his family with prayer upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ, and made the station of his prayer to God the station of our prayer. Whoever turns away from his milla has made a fool of himself, and whoever follows him has been guided to a straight path. In conclusion, the Abrahamic imamate is what gathers all prophets and messengers, what combines knowledge, wisdom, purification, and great moral character, and what qualifies the human to be truly God’s successor on earth. And God knows best the reality of what was, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.

17. Summary of the Report
The summary of all these calculations is that the Earth is billions of years old, that modern humans appeared about 300,000 years ago, and that human-like beings lived millions of years before that. These figures are not random estimates, but the results of precise mathematical calculations based on measured physical constants such as half-lives of radioactive isotopes and genetic mutation rates. They do not conflict with the Qur’anic text, but provide a chronological framework that can be consistent with it. Ancient humans were biological creatures, unaccountable, and modern humans are those into whom the spirit was breathed, so they became accountable successors.

The angels asked with confidence based on prior knowledge, observation, or inference, but they did not encompass God’s wisdom. Iblis measured by matter, forgot the secret of the spirit, and became arrogant. The new human was created with a formative neutrality that neither seeks authority nor rejects it. Then Satan came to manipulate the less knowledgeable, drawing them into practices similar to the ancient ones. So the Creator decreed that Satan and his followers will fill Hell, because Satan challenges God’s project in His successor, and because the human who follows him possessed the spirit but acted at the level of one who has no spirit.
If the human forgets his Creator, he forgets his spirit, and lives at a lower level, like those whom the Creator described as having been transformed into apes. Therefore prayer and zakat are the basis for sustaining the spirit and its connection with the Creator. God is free of need of His servants’ worship, but He commanded us to do it out of mercy for us, because we are the ones in need of Him. Usury is like one whom Satan has afflicted with madness, because it cuts the human off from mercy and justice, and makes him live at a purely material level.

Extended knowledge does not stop at a limit; it extends from Adam to Abraham to the seal of the prophets. There is no imam other than Abraham, no milla other than his, and no community other than his. God commanded His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to follow his milla, linked prayer upon his family with prayer upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ, and made the station of his prayer to God the station of our prayer. The role of our Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was not limited to what Abraham and Ishmael asked for; he came to complete noble moral character, and God praised him: “And indeed, you are of a great moral character.” The true identity of one who follows Muhammad ﷺ is character. All other rulings and acts of worship came through the books of God, His messengers, and His prophets. The religion is one, the milla is one, the imam is one, and the goal is one: worshiping God alone, acquiring noble moral character, and building the earth with justice and goodness. This reading is coherent mathematically and scientifically, but it remains an interpretive reading, because the spirit is from the command of God, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little.
