A Firm Voice for Peace: King Abdullah Calls on the World to Act

24-09-2026 08:14 AM

Dr Abdel Rahman Mitib Altakhaineh
King Abdullah II delivered a firm and principled appeal at the 81st United Nations General Assembly, urging world leaders to confront injustice rather than allow it to fade from international attention.

His address combined concern for people suffering from war with a clear demand for accountability. Speaking directly about the cost of global inaction, he reminded the Assembly that leadership means staying committed to difficult issues, even after they disappear from the headlines.

“History rarely catches us entirely by surprise. More often, it catches us focused elsewhere,” he said.

The King devoted much of his speech to Gaza and the West Bank, accusing the Israeli government of pursuing policies that undermine Palestinian statehood. He challenged world leaders to match their commitments to international law with meaningful action, including sanctions, asset freezes and embargoes.

What stood out was his balance of firmness and commitment to peace. While strongly defending Palestinian rights, he reaffirmed Jordan’s belief in diplomacy and cooperation. His message was clear: choosing dialogue should never be mistaken for weakness.

That same determination shaped his warning about Israeli activities in southern Syria. He stressed that Jordan would protect its borders, water security and people, placing national responsibility alongside his wider call for regional stability.

King Abdullah also pledged continued support for UNRWA and the protection of Muslim and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem, reflecting Jordan’s enduring humanitarian and religious responsibilities.

His speech presented a vision of leadership grounded in consistency, compassion and courage. Rather than simply describing the region’s challenges, he urged the world to take responsibility for addressing them.

“The future is shaped not only by what we do, but by what we choose to ignore,” he concluded.
