Ammon News - The number of recorded suicide cases in Jordan fell to 156 last year, compared with 166 cases in 2024, a decrease of nearly 6%, according to the annual report of the National Centre for Human Rights.

The report, based on data from the National Centre for Forensic Medicine at the Ministry of Health, showed that the 156 cases recorded in 2025 involved 112 males and 44 females, compared with 136 males and 30 females in 2024.

According to the data, the 19–24 and 25–34 age groups recorded the highest number of cases in 2025, with 41 cases each, totaling 82 cases — more than half of all recorded cases.

The 35–44 age group recorded 24 cases, while 18 cases were reported among those aged 15–18 and 11 cases among children under 15.

There were 12 cases among those aged 45–54, six among those aged 55–64, and three involving people over 65.

The National Centre for Human Rights said the 18 suicide cases among those aged 15–18 highlight the need for greater attention to this age group, including expanded mental health, prevention, psychological support and behavioral modification programs.

Regarding methods, hanging was the most commonly recorded method, accounting for 84 cases, followed by falls from heights with 29 cases and gunshots with 25 cases. Nine cases involved burns, while another nine involved other methods.

The Centre reiterated its recommendations against criminalizing attempted suicide and called for social, psychological, health and economic support for people who attempt suicide. It also stressed the need to study the underlying causes, including economic conditions, poverty and unemployment and their effects.
