Jordan develops national organ donation protocol

31-08-2026 03:37 PM

Ammon News - Jordan is developing a national protocol to regulate organ donation and transplantation following the addition of an organ donation registration service to the Sanad government application, Health Minister Ibrahim Bdour said Monday.

Bdour told Petra that the protocol will involve health, legal, religious, and other relevant sectors and will define the roles of participating institutions, follow-up procedures for registered donors, and priorities for patients requiring transplants.

The new Sanad service, introduced following a Cabinet decision, allows citizens to review relevant information and digitally register their willingness to donate organs. The registration will later appear among the approved personal data associated with family records.

Bdour said the protocol will address medical, legal, and Sharia-related aspects of organ donation, including religious rulings concerning donation after brain death.

He explained that brain death is determined by specialized medical committees according to approved criteria, including in cases where some organ functions are maintained through life-support systems.

The minister added that expanding organ donation would rely primarily on existing healthcare infrastructure, improved coordination, and staff training rather than the establishment of new centers.

He also highlighted the role of digital government services in facilitating organ donation registration and stressed the importance of coordination among medical, legal, and religious institutions, as well as public awareness efforts.

Yesterday, the Cabinet approved adding the organ donation service to Sanad for citizens to register their willingness to donate digitally and expand access to the service.
