The U.S. Embassy in Amman has issued a security alert warning American citizens against traveling to Aqaba's international airport and seaport after Jordanian authorities evacuated both facilities due to what was described as a "specific and credible threat."

In the alert issued on Sunday, the embassy urged U.S. citizens to comply with all security directives issued by Jordanian authorities and reiterated its longstanding advice to avoid travel to military bases in Jordan.

The embassy also reminded Americans that on March 2, 2026, the Department of State ordered non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members to leave Jordan due to safety risks.

As part of its guidance, the embassy advised U.S. citizens to avoid demonstrations and large public gatherings, stay away from areas with a heavy police presence, monitor local media for updates, and follow instructions from local authorities.

Travelers whose flights may be affected were urged to contact their airlines directly for information regarding schedule changes. The embassy also encouraged Americans to exercise caution at locations publicly associated with the United States and to keep a low profile.

Additionally, the embassy recommended enrollment in the State Department’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), which provides security updates and enables U.S. embassies and consulates to contact citizens more easily in the event of an emergency.
