Ammon News - A source at Jordan’s Ministry of Water and Irrigation responded to reports regarding the purchase of additional water quantities from Israel, emphasizing that securing water supplies for citizens and all sectors across the Kingdom remains a top national priority.

The source stated that, in order to safeguard national interests, the government had already prepared and begun implementing alternative plans and contingency scenarios for all possibilities since last year to ensure the continuity of water supplies.

The source stressed that Jordan continues to receive its national water rights as stipulated in the peace treaty, adding that the plans included urgent measures to rehabilitate and improve the productivity of several wells, drill and equip new wells in cooperation with the private sector, utilize non-conventional water sources such as saline wells, and intensify campaigns against illegal water use and encroachments on water resources. These efforts have helped secure additional quantities of water and reduce part of the drinking water deficit.

The source also noted that the Ministry of Water and Irrigation is continuing efforts to finalize the financial closure of the National Water Carrier Project in cooperation with relevant stakeholders. The project is expected to provide 300 million cubic meters of water annually, covering most of Jordan’s needs, addressing the chronic water shortage, and enabling immediate implementation once finalized.
