Khamsin low brings unstable weather ahead of sharp temperature drop

03-05-2026 08:16 AM

Ammon News - A Khamsin low-pressure system is driving unstable weather across the Kingdom on Sunday, with strong winds and dense dust significantly reducing visibility, ahead of a sharp temperature decline expected early this week.

The Jordan Meteorological Department said southwesterly winds have intensified across most regions, with gusts exceeding 60 km/h in some areas, particularly in the Badia. The winds are lifting large amounts of dust, causing poor horizontal visibility and, at times, near-zero visibility on desert roads, posing risks to road users.

Clouds are spreading at various altitudes, while light and intermittent rain showers are expected in scattered areas, mainly during the evening and night hours.

The department warned of multiple weather hazards, including reduced visibility due to dust, strong wind gusts, and slippery roads in areas experiencing rainfall. It urged the public to exercise caution, particularly drivers on external roads and individuals with respiratory conditions.

A significant drop in temperatures is forecast on Monday, marking a shift to relatively cold conditions across most regions, while the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba will remain comparatively warmer. Low clouds are expected to persist, with light rainfall likely in northern areas and limited parts of central regions. Westerly winds will continue, accompanied by occasional strong gusts.

Cooler conditions are expected to extend into Tuesday, with relatively cold weather prevailing in most parts of the Kingdom. Low cloud cover will remain over northern and central regions, with a continued chance of light rain in parts of the north. Winds will shift to northwesterly, blowing at moderate speeds and becoming active at times.

Conditions are expected to stabilize on Wednesday, with a slight rise in temperatures bringing generally mild weather across most areas and warmer conditions in lower elevations, under moderate northwesterly winds.

Temperatures on Sunday are forecast to range between 25 C and 11 C in East Amman, and 23 C and 9 C in West Amman. The northern highlands will record 22 C and 7 C, while the Sharah highlands will see 23 C and 5 C.

In the Badia, temperatures will range between 28 C and 9 C, and in the plains between 25 C and 10 C. The northern Jordan Valley will record 30 C and 13 C, the southern Jordan Valley 35 C and 16 C, the Dead Sea 33 C and 15 C, and the Gulf of Aqaba 35 C and 16 C. Petra
