Ammon News - The Council for Iftaa’, Research, and Islamic Studies has determined that the value of Zakat al-Fitr for this year is set at 180 piastres (JD 1.80) per person. It also fixed the Fidya — the compensation for those unable to fast due to old age or chronic illness — at a minimum of one dinar (JD 1.00) for each missed day, to be given in the form of feeding a needy person.
In a statement issued Monday, the General Iftaa’ Department explained that the estimated amount corresponds to the value of approximately 2.5 kilograms of wheat, regarded as a staple food in Jordan. The Department stressed that Zakat al-Fitr is a mandatory religious duty (wajib), adding that anyone who donates more than the prescribed amount will be rewarded accordingly.
It further clarified that Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory for every Muslim who possesses sufficient food for themselves and their dependents on the day of Eid, beyond their essential needs. The payment is made on one’s own behalf and on behalf of those whom one is financially responsible for.
Although it is permissible to pay Zakat al-Fitr from the start of Ramadan, the Department noted that the preferred time for fulfilling this obligation is between sunset on the final day of Ramadan and the Eid prayer.
