Cold front sweeps Kingdom, bringing rain and sharp drop in temperatures

28-01-2026 08:22 AM

Ammon News - A cold and moist air mass sweeping across the Kingdom on Wednesday is driving a sharp drop in temperatures, widespread rainfall, and hazardous conditions, including the risk of flash floods and severely reduced visibility in several regions.

Weather conditions are cold and increasingly cloudy, with light and scattered rain possible during the morning hours in northern areas. Westerly winds strengthen through the day, producing strong gusts that lift dust across large parts of the Kingdom, particularly in desert regions and along major desert highways, sharply reducing horizontal visibility.

Conditions deteriorate further during the afternoon as cloud cover thickens and rain spreads across northern and central regions, extending to limited parts of eastern and southwestern areas. Rainfall may turn heavy for short periods in parts of the north and center and could be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail.

The Jordan Meteorological Department warned of flash flooding in valleys and low-lying areas in northern and central regions. Additional warnings include dangerously poor visibility caused by blowing dust, low clouds, and fog especially over high mountain elevations as well as slippery roads in areas experiencing rainfall.

On Thursday, the Kingdom remains under the influence of the cold air mass. Cold and partly cloudy to cloudy conditions persist, with a continued chance of light, scattered rain through the midday hours in northern and central regions. Winds remain southwesterly and occasionally active, particularly in eastern areas.

A gradual easing of conditions begins on Friday, with a slight rise in temperatures. Despite the increase, weather remains relatively cold across most regions, while turning milder in the Jordan Valley, the Dead Sea, and Aqaba under mid- and high-level cloud cover and moderate southwesterly winds.

Temperatures edge up again on Saturday, though relatively cold conditions persist across much of the Kingdom. Milder weather continues in low-lying areas, with high clouds present and southwesterly winds remaining moderate.

Temperatures on Wednesday range between 12 and 5 degrees Celsius in eastern Amman and 10 and 4 degrees in western Amman. The northern highlands record 9 to 3 degrees, while the Sharah highlands range between 10 and 4 degrees.

Desert areas see temperatures between 14 and 3 degrees, plains between 13 and 6 degrees, and the northern Jordan Valley between 19 and 8 degrees. In the south, the Jordan Valley records 22 to 10 degrees, while the Dead Sea and Aqaba range between 21 to 9 degrees and 22 to 10 degrees Celsius, respectively. Petra
