Ammon News - Minister of Agriculture, Engineer Khaled Al-Hunaifat confirmed that the rise in red meat prices is due to several external and internal factors, most notably animal diseases in supplying countries such as Romania, rising global demand, and climate change affecting pastures in Jordan.
Al-Hunaifat told Amen FM on Sunday that the self-sufficiency rate for red meat has increased from 28% to 45% thanks to support for breeders through loans and fodder, he also warned that halting the export of Jordanian sheep could lead to the collapse of the livestock sector next year.
He pointed out that the ministry has opened the door to imports from several new sources, including Syria and Lebanon.
Regarding the rise in lemon prices, which have reached more than JD3 per kilo, Al-Hunaifat explained that the problem was expected, and the ministry had previously called on citizens to store lemons during peak production periods.
The ministry has opened the door to imports from several countries to address the shortage, the minister added, noting that prices in producing countries such as Egypt and Syria are also high, contributing to higher prices in the local market.
